The Blakes Solo Song Competition 2017

February 22, 2017

This competition was this year as keenly fought as ever, with six excellent performances adjudicated by Mr. Stephen Marshall from Abergavenny.

Thomas opened with a very controlled performance of Michael Head’s famous Sweet Chance, sung is his sweet and true treble, and he was followed by Rui performing John Ireland’s equally famous Sea Fever in his newly-acquired tenor voice.  Oliver, in his nicely-maturing bass, gave us Vaughan Williams’ matchless Whither shall I wander? and Toby gave a dramatic account of Lord God of Abraham from Elijah.  Jack’s account of Trade Winds was full of joy and poise and Christian closed with another Vaughan Williams tour de force, Silent Noon.

Mr. Marshall commented on the need to polish one’s stage-craft and tell the story, and gave first place to Oliver and second to Christian.
