Music teacher set to receive an MBE

A much-loved Band Master, who has looked after lower brass at Monmouth School for eight years, is set to receive an MBE.

Major Denis Burton, who leads the Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of The Royal Welsh around the Principality Stadium before every international rugby game at home, was “delighted” on hearing the news but also “slightly stunned”.

The 60-year-old started playing the trombone in school and in a local brass and conducted by his father who was in the Grenadier Guards.

He enlisted into the army as a Junior Musician aged 15 before the school leaving age was raised, completing training in Bovington, Dorset.

After attending the yearlong musician’s course at the Royal Military School of Music (RMSM) he quickly established himself as the principal trombonist in the Staff Band of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
