This year, Monmouth School and HMSG again sent two teams to the annual German Debating Competition at Clifton College, Bristol.

Our 6.2 team, made up of Josephine, Daniel and Michael took part in a very interesting debate on the topic of immigration controls. The team did extremely well to defend their viewpoints and answer the opposing questions, but ultimately the judges could not choose between the two teams, in a debate which was of a very high standard.

The 6.1 team, made up of Rosie, Nyasha and Izzy argued against same-sex parents, in another well-contested battle. They successfully opposed the notion, winning their debate.

Spectators were hugely impressed by the standard of debate, linguistic ability of the pupils and the enthusiasm for German on display. We are delighted to see pupils taking part again in an event which gives them extra confidence in their spoken German, and lots of useful practice for their oral exam and we’re also very grateful to Clifton College for hosting an event which gives pupils such a valuable experience.
