November 25, 2016

string-comp-2016Held in the Music School, this competition was adjudicated by Head of Strings of the National Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, Stephen McDade.  Arnold opened with a committed and gutsy performance of the overture of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (on the Bass) and Sam followed with an accomplished rendition of Allegro.  Edward gave a stirring account of MacMillan’s Sabre Dance and Christopher a very poised performance of Telemann’s Allegro.  Michael took to the floor to play Bohm’s Sarabande and Arnold once more followed (on the ‘cello this time) with the famous Prelude from Bach’s ‘Cello Suite No. 1.  Ethan gave a very controlled account of Dudziardz by Wieniawski and Jason then gave a most atmospheric account of????? by Xu Jiangde. Tudor gave us Parry’s Sonata No. 1 on the harp and Roderick closed with an exciting account of Copland’s famous Rodeo.  Arnold took second prize for his rendition of Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg on the Double Bass, and first prize was taken by Jason (pictured) for his electric performance on the Erhu of his teacher’s composition.
