Football News – New season starts with success

January 8, 2017

football-ipSaturday saw an exciting opening set of fixtures unfold for the football club with the U15As, 2nd XI and 1st XI playing their first Mercian League games.

At home there were some inspiring games in the U14 age group with the As winning 4-3 and the Bs, in perhaps the most exciting game of the day, running out 9-7 winners. For Mr Stentiford’s U16s it was a little more straightforward for the team despite having not trained once together before the match. They played fluid attacking football dominating the opposition winning 15-1; with Rory scoring 5 and Gavin picking up a hat-trick.

Away from home some very tight fixtures took place with the U15As losing 5-2 and the U15Bs winning 5-3. Mr Despontin’s 2nd XI got off to a flying start winning 6-1 with captain Isaac scoring 2 and assisting 2 and Angus scoring a ‘worldie’ from the edge of the box.

For the 1st XI we faced possibly the toughest opposition of the Mercian League as we came up against last year’s winners. However, Monmouth started the game brightly dominating possession and putting together some great attacking moves. Half way through the first half Monmouth came very close with an excellently worked corner leading to Nick hitting the bar. Monmouth continued to dominate, however, Kings Worcester equalised just before half-time after a catalogue of errors at the back. The second half started in similar fashion with the Kings Worcester goalkeeper making several good saves most notably from a one on one with Asanji and 5th former George, growing into the game on his debut. Monmouth continued to press but were caught out by an unfortunate counter attack and despite a late goal from a set piece it wasn’t enough to get the result we deserved.

We can take a lot of positives from the game outplaying our opposition but the need to take our chances became very clear. As a whole the football club enjoyed a very successful weekend scoring 42 goals in total highlighting the attacking style of football being played; which I’m sure many of you will enjoy when coming to watch the games in the months ahead.
