Tatler Schools Guide 2013

"Money matters, so let's cut to the chase: thanks to a generous income from the Haberdashers' Company, Monmouth's fees are among the best value in the country.

The school has ideal pupil-staff ratios and a mind-bogglingly ambitious redevelopment plan under way that includes a new dining hall, play area and classrooms, with phase one due to launch in 2013. Luxurious Buchanan House for sixth-form boarders opened last year too.

Academically, boys here achieve 81 per cent A*-B at A-level, and they have a formidable reputation in rugby and rowing. There are plenty of joint activities with Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls down the road, from a recent production of Tom Stoppard's On the Razzle to mixed pairs finishing second in the World Debating Championships in South Africa and, of course, socials. The Blake Theatre has been acoustically tested by the Welsh National Opera and there are awards galore in everything from music to engineering. And a plethora of clubs offer such activities as angling and astronomy.

Crucially, it seems that staff really do know pupils well, with dedicated tutors giving individuals all the attention they need in order to shine."
