The Monmouth School rugby team has marked the end of an extremely successful season by reaching the semi-finals of the Rosslyn Park Sevens, the world’s largest rugby tournament.
The School’s VII more than held their own in the tournament, with comfortable wins against The Oratory and Blundells. In a closely-fought semi-final, the Monmouth side lost out to the eventual tournament winners, Wellington College. This performance follows on from the success of last year’s VII, who also reached the semi-finals.
In 2010, the 1st XV enjoyed the rare distinction of remaining unbeaten in all of their matches, scoring an average of 31 points (and an impressive 5 tries) per game. The team’s captain, George, also featured as ‘player of the month’ in Rugby World magazine.
John Bevan, former British Lion and Master in Charge of Rugby Coaching at Monmouth School said, “The rugby VII’s superb performance in the Rossyln Park Sevens has been the culmination of an outstanding season, where the squad remained unbeaten against some of the best rugby schools in England and Wales. I am immensely proud of the boys, the majority of whom have been playing rugby for the School since the age of 11.”
