Robot Sports Day

Computing students enjoyed an alternative Sports Day, competing against each other with robots they had designed, built and programmed.  They worked in teams of two to compete in an assault course, target shooting, shot putting and a sprint event.  Students spent time in designing, building and testing their bots, with tests highlighting strengths and flaws in the designs which the students worked to enhance and resolve.

Each event focussed on different skills, for example the Sprint gave opportunity to experiment with gearing systems, while the Maze required precise control to manage tight turns and corners; the Shot Putting tested a different set of skills from the more precise Target Shooting.

Alex and Philip did particularly well at designing a lightweight, geared bot which moved very swiftly through speed testing, while James S and James L built a bot that had good handling and shooting mechanisms, enabling good performance through the maze and in the target shooting games.

Competition was fierce and many ideas were gained for future bot development.
