A Level Computing students from Monmouth School were joined by A Level ICT students from HMSG to hear Dr Tom Crick speaking on ‘Computing: The Science of Nearly Everything’. Dr Crick, a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science in the Department of Information Systems at Cardiff Metropolitan University (formerly UWIC), has been working with our students as a Researcher in Residence and this was his third visit to the School.
He met with students in the William Jones Room, speaking with enthusiasm and insight on the way in which Computing touches almost every area of contemporary life. Covering topics from the ubiquity of technology in daily life, to siting data centers in near-Arctic climes to optimize cooling through the environment; from geo-location and privacy issues, to the design and development of next-generation microprocessors, all was soundly grounded in real world experience and gave our students insight into this fast-moving industry.
The students were then able to question Dr Crick, gaining understanding of current Computing opportunities in industry and in research, and discovering how the problem-solving skills learned through Computing can be applied in a vast range of other disciplines from Games Development to Finance and Bioengineering. 6.2 student, James, did an excellent job of offering a vote of thanks on behalf of all the students.
