Throughout Key Stage 3 the intention is to refine skills developed throughout the Foundation stage and Key Stage 2. In Form 1 – 3 boys follow a broad-based curriculum covering the understanding of the formal visual elements: line, tone, shape, form, texture, colour and pattern. This varied approach introduces pupils to a wide spectrum of media and techniques in which to explore their ideas. In each year pupils will produce a balance of design based and expressive outcomes and will experience a paint/draw, 3D/Ceramics and a printmaking opportunity. Throughout this key stage pupils will be introduced to the work of artists, designers and craftspeople, both past and present, as well as creations from different cultures. This is an essential part of the course which helps pupils to develop creative understanding and knowledge. As pupils progress through Key Stage 3, they are encouraged to gain greater independence in their choice of materials and processes and become more confident with offering a personal response to artwork whilst using an appropriate art vocabulary. A genuine interest in the subject, a positive work ethic and a confident level of ability are necessary attributes of any Form 3 pupil wishing to continue with GCSE Art and Design.
