All pupils follow the OCR GCSE syllabus which offers opportunities to explore a broad range of media and to improve skills and knowledge in painting techniques, printmaking, digital imaging, photography, mixed media and ceramic /sculptural processes. Pupils are expected to develop, record, refine and present their work in order to fulfil the 4 assessment objectives. Within their work portfolio pupils must show the entire ‘journey’ with a willingness to evaluate and experiment, refine and improve ideas before arriving at a personal final outcome/s. Trips to national and local galleries, as well as workshops with practising artists and designers, are seen as an important element of the GCSE course. This develops awareness of the subject in a broader context, allowing pupils to make relevant connections with creative industries.
The course is divided into two parts:
Unit 1: Personal Portfolio in Art and Design: internally set projects (45hrs controlled assessment) 60% marks
Unit 2: Externally Set Assignment (ESA): externally set titles (10hr timed set task) 40% marks
The Assessment Objectives are as follows:
AO1 – DEVELOP 25%
AO2 – REFINE 25%
AO3 – RECORD 25%
AO4 – PRESENT 25%
All work is marked internally and externally moderated. Preparation for the ESA is mandatory; with the majority of marks awarded for preparatory work, papers are issued well in advance giving pupils ample opportunity to prepare thoroughly. Pupils are expected to show a high level of commitment including regular attendance to additional weekly sessions.
