South Pacific

Parents, pupils and local residents enjoyed ‘some enchanted evening’ at South Pacific, a joint production between Monmouth School and HMSG on the 4th, 5th and 6th March at the Blake Theatre.

Described as ‘one of the finest musicals of the 20th century’, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific is a story of love, mistrust and loss, at times both comic and tragic.

With outstanding performances from the cast and band, audiences were treated to well-known favourites including ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, ‘There is nothin’ like a Dame’ and ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair’.

Taking the lead role, Joanna was perfectly cast as Nellie Forbush, complemented by the assured performance of Simeon as Emile de Becque.  Laura’s comic timing and singing was first-class in her interpretation of Bloody Mary, and Alastair greatly impressed taking the part of Lieutenant Joe Cable.

A cast of 39 from the two schools, supported by a band of 27 including adults, clearly enjoyed themselves from beginning to end, and the three sold-out nights demonstrated that the audience did too.
