The evening of the Hatton-Bucknall woodwind competition is always a glorious festival of woodwind playing. In recent years there have been huge improvements in the standard of playing, in the range of styles and in the spread of competitors across the age range.
On Wednesday 11th May, a large and appreciative audience in the Glover School Auditorium enjoyed the performances of nine of our best woodwind players drawn from Form 1 to 6.2. Connoisseurs of music for clarinet will have enjoyed something of a Finzi-fest with four of the ‘Five Bagatelles’ in the programme as well as music by Carl Baermann and Johannes Brahms. Adjudicator Catherine Handley, a distinguished flautist, faced the unenviable challenge of choosing a winner. Our congratulations this year go to clarinettist Will and runner-up Tomos – our thanks to the boys who participated for, once again, making the whole evening an occasion to savour.
