The Haberdashers' Monmouth Schools enjoyed a very successful day at the recent British Rowing Regional Championship Regatta in Nottingham, returning with 3 medals between them.
The crews were representing the West County and Wales regional team, competing against similar teams from all over England. The success began with the WJ15 coxed four from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, who rowed well to win a Bronze medal at their first big race of the season; the crew of Rachel, Bethan, Gracie, Alice and Felicity chased down Warrington hard in the last 500m, but ran out of water to overtake them for the Silver.
The highest place finish of the day was to follow shortly when the HMSG WJ16 coxed four of Kathryn, Lizzie, Jo, Emily and Hollie rowed through St Edward’s School in the last 200m to take the Silver medal, a strong finish that took the school from Oxford completely by surprise.
The final medal came in the last race of the day when the Monmouth School J16 eight of Harri, Henry, Courtney, Jeremy, Ben, Bowen, James, Kristian and Laurie came home in the bronze medal position, in a strong field that included the top two J16 eights from the Schools' Head in March.
HMSG and Llandaff also achieved a 4th in WJ16 eights with Monmouth School achieving a 7th in the J16 coxed four and a 9th in the J14 coxed quad. All the crews are looking to carry this success into the National Schools Regatta in May and the National Championships in July.
