Fencing

Monmouth School pupils, George and Henry won Gold Medals (U15 and U13 respectively) in the recent Leon Paul Junior Series held at the Wrexham Fencing Club.

George won the U15 age group.  Having got off to a slow start, George improved with every fight. On his way to the final, he defeated the number 4 seed and the number 1 seed, eventually wining the final 15-11.

Henry won the U11 age group.  Undefeated in all of his fights, both in the two rounds of pools and the Direct Elimination, Henry fenced very competitively all day.  The more he fenced, the better he competed.  He eventually won the final 8-5, in what was a very tough fight, beating a boy he had fenced 3 times in the day!

Representing Monmouth School, both George and Henry are starting to fulfil their potential at the highest levels in British Junior Fencing.  This is a great achievement, well done!

George has made tremendous achievements in this year’s Public Schools Fencing Championship, representing Monmouth School.

George won the Boys’ Mount-Haes Epee.  107 boys were entered.  There were two poules where George won 6 out of the 8 fights.  This gave him an overall ranking of 13th, going in to the Direct Elimination.  He progressed through the first two Direct Elimination rounds relatively easily.  He then came up against strong opposition in the quarter finals and the semi-finals  In the semi-finals, he beat the top ranked seed from Westminster, 12-7, in a very tough fight.  In fact this was the best fight of the day.  In the final, he eventually won, 15-8.

He also took part in the Boys’ Mount-Haes Foil.  116 boys were entered.  Again, there were two poules where George won all of his 9 fights.  This gave him an overall ranking of 3rd, going in to the Direct Elimination.  He progressed through the first two Direct Elimnation rounds relatively easily.  He then came up against strong opposition in the quarter finals; eventually losing to the same boy he had beaten in the semi-finals of the Epee. This gave George 5th position overall in the Foil.

All in all, this is a tremendous achievement for George, well done!
