Sport plays a large part in the lives of many Sixth Formers. Games on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons is a compulsory part of the Sixth Form curriculum. There are four main team sports and a wide variety of minor sports to choose from:

Rugby (Autumn Term)

Monmouth School has a proud rugby tradition and has produced players who have gone on to achieve National Representative honours for Wales, England and Ireland as well as the British Lions such as Eddie Butler (Wales and British Lions) and more recently Richard Parks (Wales) 2002.

Coaching of the highest standard is overseen by John Bevan (Wales and British Lions) who coaches the 1st XV squad. The School fields a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and sometimes a 4th XV on Saturday afternoons during the Autumn term against Welsh and English Schools. Players in the 1st XV squad are required to train four times a week, sometimes after school. Seven a side rugby is played in the Spring Term culminating in the Rosslyn Park National Seven a side competition.

Regular Tours are organised by the Rugby Club. The most recent was to Canada in 2009.

Rowing (all year)

Rowing takes place throughout the year at Monmouth.  The Rowing Club welcomes both experienced and novice oarsmen in the sixth form, who benefit not only from excellent equipment and facilities but also from expert tuition from a team of highly experienced coaches, within a structured, professional environment.

Regular training takes place from our own boathouse on the beautiful River Wye and we regularly compete in local and National events.  Recent years have seen success at the National Schools’ Regatta and at Henley.  Individuals are encouraged and supported with any international aspirations.  We regularly see our boys competing for Wales and have a proud tradition of producing GB internationals, the most recent being Tom Lucy who won a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Rob Howe (University of London, GB U23 Bronze medallist) heads the coaching team, supported by Mark Hayter (GB Olympic Sculler) who takes the Second VII, David Blackham (Durham University Development Coach), and Alun Brown (Welsh Lightweight International).

Football (Spring Term)

Football is the main team sport in the Spring Term. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI’s have regular matches on Saturday afternoons against Welsh and English schools.

Training and matches takes place on the School playing fields but if the ground gets too wet or freezes the all weather pitch by the School Sports Complex is used.

Regular Tours are organised by the Football Club, most recently to Real Madrid in 2008.

Cricket (Summer Term)

Cricket at Monmouth School is strong.  Enthusiastic and dedicated coaching is provided by three ex-professional cricketers, Andy Jones (Wales), James Boiling (Surrey, England A) and Graham Burgess (Somerset) and now a first class umpire.

The Squad in 2009 contains three Sixth Formers who have been involved in the Wales and England regional U17 squad and several pupils who are members of the Glamorgan Cricket Academy.

The Cricket Club welcomes all types of player. There are regular fixtures on Saturday afternoons for the 1st XI and 2nd XI during the Summer Term as well as indoor nets over the winter. In addition to the regular weekly fixtures, the 1st XI compete in the Chesterton knock out trophy, the final being played at New Road, Worcester, and the Castle cricket festival at the end of the Summer Term.

Regular Tours are organised by the Cricket Club, the most recent one being to South Africa in 2008.
