English and English Literature GCSE

Through Forms IV (Year 10) and V (Year 11), students pursue a continuous programme leading to qualifications in both English Language and English Literature following the WJEC specification.  During the two-year programme, students complete five pieces of written coursework and three speaking and listening coursework assignments.  At the end of Form V, students sit two exams in English Language and two exams in English Literature.

 ENGLISH LANGUAGE:

Exams (40%)

1.      English Language Unit 1 (20%) - Studying written language:

This unit will test the reading of two non-fiction texts.

2.      English Language Unit 2 (20%) – Using written language (information and ideas):

This unit will test transactional and discursive writing through two equally weighted tasks.

 Coursework / Controlled Assessments (60%):

1.      Studying written language (15%) – one essay on an extended literary text.

2.      Using language (15%) – one piece of descriptive writing and one piece of narrative/expressive writing.

3.      Studying spoken language (10%) – one essay examining an aspect of spoken language.

4.      Speaking and listening (20%) – three tasks.

 ENGLISH LITERATURE:

 Exams (75%):

1.      English Literature Unit 1 (35%) – Prose and poetry:

Section A (21%) requires candidates to answer two questions on the chosen prose text.  Section B (14%) requires candidates to compare two contemporary poems.

2.      English Literature Unit 2 (40%) – Literary heritage drama and contemporary prose:

This will required candidates to answer two questions on each text.

 Coursework / Controlled Assessment (25%):

1.      Poetry and Shakespeare – one essay linking the two texts (25%).
