Rowing

At MONMOUTH SCHOOL boys can row from the third form as their Games Option but also have a chance to try the sport earlier in our Junior Rowing Club. Crews compete at local and national events including Henley Royal Regatta. We regularly take boys on training camps, often abroad, most recently to Ghent in Belgium and previously to Agde in the South of France.

Boys are encouraged to pursue international aspirations and we have many selected to represent Wales in the Home Countries International. Recent illustrious old boys include Tom Lucy who after winning a Gold Medal at the World Junior Rowing Championships went on to represent GB at the Beijing Olympics where his VIII claimed silver. In 2009 Steve Tuck represented Great Britain in the Junior VIII at the Coupe de la Jeunesse and is now pushing for selection for the U23 National Team before continuing his education at University of California (Berkeley) on a Sports Scholarship.

This year we have four boys involved in the GB Junior selection process and two boats have represented our region in the prestigious Junior Inter-regional regatta in Nottingham – The J15 and J16 coxed fours, the latter being last year’s successful J15 crew.

We encourage boys to learn to both scull and row and place great emphasis on teamwork as well as personal development. We are fortunate to have a great stretch of river to use in a most beautiful part of the country.
