Modern Languages

Français? Deutsch? Español? Russki? Head of Department: S J Edwards

At Monmouth School we hope that every boy will enjoy the experience of learning at least one Modern Language. The department has a multi-media centre and, as well as eight members of staff, is fortunate to have the presence of foreign language assistants from France, Spain and Germany.   French is studied in the first three years in the School by almost all pupils, the majority of whom will continue with the subject until GCSE. Boys in Form I have the opportunity to go on a long weekend visit to Normandy, while there is a flourishing study visit programme to France, Spain and Germany for the Middle School and the Sixth Form

Spanish and German become available as options in Form III and there is also the opportunity to join an accelerated starter set in Spanish in Form IV.   French, Spanish and Russian are available as Sixth Form subjects, while those who wish to continue with German will study at our sister school HMSG. There is considerable cooperation in languages between the two Schools at Sixth Form level with joint trips abroad and regular visits to the cinema to see foreign films.
