VIth Form Life

Timetable

For those in the first year of the Sixth Form the weekly timetable will contain 40 teaching lessons from Monday to Friday, which consist of eight lessons for each AS level subject, four Enrichment Programme lessons and four Games lessons. There is no Sixth Form teaching on Saturday mornings but, from time to time, Sixth Formers are required to come into school on Saturday morning. If a Sixth Former falls behind with his work he may be asked to come in on a Saturday morning to catch up.

For those in the second year of the Sixth Form the weekly timetable is the same, except that most students study three A2 levels for eight lessons a week and therefore have eight private study periods a week. The Enrichment programme takes place in the Michaelmas term. Boys studying a subject at HMSG will, when necessary, travel by minibus to and from HMSG.

Enrichment Programme

During the first year in the Sixth Form, students will undertake an Enrichment Programme, which is designed to give students opportunities to broaden their horizons (and, in some cases, to gain additional qualifications) alongside their AS level subjects. During the second year in the Sixth Form, most students will take part in an Enrichment Programme which will run for the Michaelmas Term only. Enrichment is optional for those doing four A levels. Further Mathematics and Critical Thinking will be taken during the Enrichment Programme.

Homework

It is expected that students in the Sixth Form will spend approximately 15 hours a week working in their own time on their academic subjects.

Games

The compulsory games programme is organised through a preference system. For those not required for major sports (rugby, rowing, soccer, and cricket) a wide range of activities is offered. These usually include weight training, cross-country running, tennis, athletics, golf, volley-ball, fencing, squash, swimming and canoeing. For planning and organisational purposes allocation to an activity is for a minimum of one term. Games is optional for VI.2 in the Summer Term. The fitness suite in the Sports Centre is available exclusively to Sixth Formers from 2.00 to 2.40pm daily. The Head of Physical Education, Mr D. M. Vickers, will advise on other times when the Sports Complex is available.

Tutor System

One of the distinguishing features of being in the Sixth Form is having a personal Tutor in addition to the Housemaster. He/she will most likely be a senior teacher with a lot of experience and knowledge of the A level system and higher education. In most cases Sixth Formers are allocated a Tutor of their own choosing, usually one of their subject teachers. Tutors have a number of specific roles:

  • To monitor and support academic development.
  • To support the personal development of tutees.
  • To provide higher education and career guidance.

The Sixth Form Centre

This is an attractive and well-resourced building for the exclusive use of Sixth Formers from Monmouth School and HMSG. The ground floor area has a games room, café and seating areas for socialising. The first floor contains the Economics Department and the Seminar Room. On the top floor there is a computer suite and work area.

Dress

The Sixth Form is a distinct part of the school and, as such, Sixth Formers are allowed some choice over what they wear. They are expected to dress for a smart business or professional environment which usually means a suit or a dark blue blazer and dark trousers. Details can be found in the Sixth Form handbook.
