The Course The Mathematics course in Forms IV (Year 10) and V (Year 11) is a natural continuation of the work covered in the subject in earlier years. Pupils will develop their knowledge of Number, Geometry, Statistics and Algebra, as well as experiencing some of the practical applications of the subject.
GCSE success in the subject is seen as a prerequisite for most careers and entry into higher education.
The department teaches its pupils in five groups, setted by ability, to try to ensure that each boy’s potential in the subject is fulfilled.
Assessment • Two written papers: Paper 1 (90 minutes) accounts for approximately 40% of the final mark, and Paper 2 (2 hours) for approximately 60% of the final assessment. Each paper is split into a non-calculator and a calculator section.
• There are two tiers of entry available for GCSE Maths: Higher Tier accesses grades A* - D, whilst Foundation Tier accesses grades C – U. All sets will be prepared for the Higher Tier examinations and it is anticipated that Foundation level will be used rarely at Monmouth. It should, though, be noted that the Higher Tier specification does contain a large amount of work that will be challenging for candidates working at B or C grade level and it is likely that, for these boys, a choice will be made to develop mastery of and confidence in work of an appropriate level, rather than attempting superficial coverage of the whole GCSE specification.
