Head of Department: Dr J P Danks Board: AQA
The course followed is based on the AQA Modular A level syllabus and consists of six modules spread over two years. In VI.1 Core Chemistry modules 1 and 2, are taught in parallel, with the internal assessment constituting the third module. In VI.2 the more advanced modules 4 and 5 are taught with the internal assessment constituting the final module.
The approach is to teach through practical work wherever possible; each module will contain some continuous practical assessment, so development of practical awareness and confidence is an important part of all modules.
As well as standard text books you will be provided with a specific revision guide for each single module, written by the person who sets the module exam.

Practical Assessment The AS Chemistry practical assessment marks awarded in module 3 constitutes 20% of your overall AS mark. The practical and investigative skills are internally assessed through * Investigative Skills Assignment (ISA) * Practical Skills Assessment (PSA). The ISA will require students to undertake practical work, collect and process data and use it to answer questions in a written test (ISA test). The PSA requires internal assessment, throughout the AS course, of the your ability to follow and undertake certain standard practical activities across the three areas of Chemistry: Inorganic, Organic and Physical.

Practical Assessment The A2 Chemistry practical assessment follows exactly the same pattern as AS, and is worth 10% of your total A2 mark.
