The Heart Project
The Heart Project is now complete.
Visitors to Monmouth School will have seen our splendid new building. Its planning and construction came under the banner of The Heart Project – a very exciting, major building project that will have a beneficial impact on all members of the School community. Thanks to a release of capital by the Trustees of the William Jones’s Schools Foundation at Haberdashers’ Hall, the first phase and second phase of the project will increase the size and number of classrooms, replace existing rooms, improve boarding facilities, streamline classroom locations, provide appropriate reception and meeting facilities and extend play and congregating spaces. The ultimate aim is to provide a ‘heart’ at the centre of the School.
Phase 1 of The Heart Project has been completed with the conversion of the old Grange building into fully en-suite, single study boarding accommodation for all our VI.2 boarders in their pre-university year. The building opened in September 2011, and Mr Kingsley Jones is the first housemaster of this new VI.2 house. A new experience for Monmouth School boarders, Buchanan House is an excellent preparation for university, helping students to focus on final examinations in their A2 year. VI.1 boarders have also benefited from the improvement in accommodation in the remaining boarding houses as well as an earlier opportunity to take responsibility for the running of their boarding house as they become the senior year in Weirhead, New House and School House.
In September 2011, another change happened as the junior boarders transferred from St James House to Chapel House, enabling us to expand the provision we offer to boys in The Grange. We now provide superb care and accommodation for boys as young as 9.
Phase 2 saw the demolition of the Red Lion block and the construction of The William Jones Building, a 20 classroom block with reception and administration facilities, which opened officially in March 2014.
