KENT-DODSWORTH COMPETITION FOR BRASS PLAYERS

A large field of boys gave almost an hour of music at the competition this year. It was opened by Kit playing the famous Guilmant Morceau de Concert and he was followed by Peter playing Arthur Pryor’s equally famous Thoughts of Love. James H played the exceptionally tricky Suite in F by William Lloyd Webber and Jack gave an atmospheric account of Grieg’s Solveig’s Song. James B gave a very secure account of Swedish Hymn (better-known to some as How Great Thou Art) and Joe S impressed all with the dexterity of his tuba playing in Schumann’s The Merry Farmer. Isaac gave us an enjoyable 633 Squadron and Thomas a most poised rendition of the first movement of Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3. Cameron played Newsome’s Tenor Trombone Rag with bounce and style and Owen gave us the very tricky first movement of Jean Hubeau’s Sonate. Jamie closed with a cheeky and well-played account of The Parson’s Nose.
Adjudicator Ken McDonald, himself an accomplished and experienced trumpet player, said that his choices had been made as much upon an evocation of style as any technical consideration and he gave second place to Peter, and first place to Thomas, for his Mozart.
